The state agency "Civil Aviation Agency" (CAA) informs that as of September 1st, 2024, the requirement that the maximum volume of one liquid container in hand luggage cannot exceed 100 millilitres will return to all European airports.

So far, some European airports have gradually introduced the newest generation of hand luggage screening systems, the performance of which allowed passengers to take larger liquid containers in their hand luggage without removing them from their hand luggage.

With Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) of July 29, 2024 No. 2024/2108 amending the Implementing Regulation (EU) 2015/1998 with regard to certain urgent aviation security measures related to the security screening facilities for liquids, aerosols and gels, it has been decided that starting from September 1st, 2024, also at airports where the latest generation of hand luggage inspection systems, in the future it will be possible to take liquid containers with a maximum volume of only up to 100 millilitres.

The CAA draws attention to the fact that passengers whose hand luggage will be checked with the latest generation scanners will not be limited to the maximum number of liquid containers, that is, the total amount of liquid in hand luggage will be able to exceed one litre. In them, you won't have to take your computers out of your carry-on luggage.

At RIX Riga Airport, the fast security screening line and the family line, as well as transit passenger screening lines, are equipped with the new screening system, so the current procedure for most passengers will not change - there may be liquid in hand luggage, where the volume of each container does not exceed 100 millilitres, all of which are placed in one special in a plastic package with a volume of one litre.

CAA has found that some passengers had already got used to the advantages of the latest hand luggage inspection system in other countries, so they took larger liquid containers in their hand luggage on flights to Latvia. The new Implementing Regulation (EU) of July 29, 2024 of the Commission No. 2024/2108 conditions will also apply to hand baggage checks at these airports. At the same time, the CAA reminds that passengers still have the option to purchase larger liquid containers after security control and take them with them on the aircraft, as well as carry them in checked baggage, unless they are on the list of prohibited liquids / substances (eg gasoline, paints, lubricants).

The restrictions have been introduced with the aim of maintaining a consistently high level of security of the civil aviation system, moreover, they have been introduced temporarily until the new generation hand baggage screening systems undergo additional tests and certification.
